In 2012, the Monroe High School Bearcat lacrosse club went winless in their first season. In 2013, the Bearcats lost each of their first two games by a single goal. The Bearcats have stepped up their game to become a worthwhile opponent for any Cascade Division WHSBLA school.
The 0-2 Monroe Bearcat lacrosse squad faced off against the 1-2 Stanwood Spartans at the Monroe High School field in front of a loud crowd of fans on Friday, March 22. The Bearcats fell, 11-5, and now stand 0-3 on the season.
The up-and-coming Bearcats held their ground for the first two quarters, but the pressure on attack from Stanwood proved too much for goalie Loren Hartzell and the rest of the defensive unit. Unforced errors from the middies and attack also made drives to the goal without points. Mathew Morris and Hunter Day contributed three points each in the loss. Goalie Loren Hartzell saved 8 out of the 19 shots on goal.
Second-year Monroe Assistant Coach Garry Hartzell said the plan for the game was to "limit Stanwood's Franklin Medlicott's effectiveness, protect the crease and not allow one-on-one breakaways at our goalie.GÇ¥
Coach Hartzell said that, with two attackmen out due to injury, it was a long second half.
"With the majority of the team freshman and sophomores, we are still learning how to bring intensity to all four quarters,GÇ¥ he said. "We did an excellent job of forcing their guys to the sidelines by our defensive riding. These guys will continue to improve and I am proud of their effort.GÇ¥
