At Big Box Clearance, a new discount store in Monroe, luxuries are affordable and necessities are incredibly low-priced.
For example, an XBox 360, sold at large chain stores for $300 on average, was priced at $167.99 at Big Box Clearance last week.
And dishwashing liquid, bottled water, cereal and other everyday items are priced at up to 70 percent off of what they sell for in other places.
Big Box Clearance, according to store manager Corey Weed, "is a deep discount retail store that specializes in selling name brand merchandise at prices up to 70 percent off traditional retail prices."
The store is located in the Fryelands, right next to Sky Valley Gymnastics and the Rock Church.
The buyers for the store comb the retail world, looking for bargains such as closed-out lines of merchandise, overstocks and last-season items, buying them in bulk and offering them at a substantial discount.
"We deal in a little bit of everything," said Weed. "We sell whatever is in demand."
Indeed, in the two-story store has a vast variety of goods.
On the first floor there is a wide array of clothes such as sweaters, brand-name winter coats and jeans at prices greatly reduced from traditional store prices.
There are also lots of grocery items; a wide selection of beauty and bath products; many bed and bath items including luxury Egyptian cotton sheets; kids' toys; luggage; carpets; kitchenware and pet supplies.
In a second room on the first floor is a broad selection of furniture. There are sectional couches, dining sets and much more, including a set of giant squashy bean bag chairs, a fun and unusual decorator item.
Upstairs, a wall of flat-screen TVs overlooks a room full of electronics. The latest in home stereo equipment, such as the popular new sounder speaker with subwoofer, can be had extremely affordably, and luxury brand watches are made reasonable for careful budgets.
The Monroe store has very local roots. It is operated by two generations of a Sky Valley family. Mick Weed, who oversees the operation, is a long-time Monroe resident who grew up in Snohomish; his wife, Gayle, grew up in Monroe; and their three sons, all of whom are involved in the business, also grew up in the area.
They chose Monroe because this is where they live and they want to offer great deals and good customer service to the town, they said.
Every item they get is rigorously examined and tested in the warehouse space behind the store. And the return policy is better than that offered by many discount retailers.
There is a seven-day satisfaction guarantee on all products, and electronics have warranties of at least 30 days. Some TVs have 90-day or one-year warranties, and others still have the manufacturer's warranty.
In fact, people who have shopped at Big Box Clearance since it opened three weeks ago have only been disappointed that they didn't come there first.
"I don't know how many people say, 'I wish I'd shopped here first,'" said Weed. "There was one woman the other day who had, like, 30 things in her cart, and she was saying, 'I bought this a month ago, I bought this a week ago, and I paid way more.'"
So he encourages people to shop Big Box Clearance first.
"You can get great deals here," he said.
Big Box Clearance Store is located at 16761 146th St. S.E., Suite 189 in Monroe, adjacent to Sky Valley Gymnastics and the Rock Church. It is open Monday-Saturday, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
