City Clerk earns honor

Monroe City Clerk Elizabeth Smoot was recognized last week for achieving the designation of Master Municipal Clerk (MMC) through the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

The International Institute of Municipal Clerks is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting professional development and educational advancement opportunities for municipal clerks. To achieve the new designation, Smoot satisfied an ambitious educational component and was acknowledged as having made a significant contribution to the City of Monroe. -á

"It is of tremendous value to us to have employees that invest time and resources into getting proper training,GÇ¥ Monroe Mayor Geoffrey Thomas said.-á

Smoot came to work for the City of Monroe in September 2013. One of 15 applicants, Smoot made it through the interview process, beating out four other candidates for the position. The University of Washington graduate holds a bachelor's degree, paralegal certificate and a Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) designation. The CMC designation was a prerequisite for obtaining the MMC designation.-á

In addition to her five years of experience working in law firms, Smoot worked as the deputy city clerk in Redmond for five years prior to coming to Monroe.-á
