EVERGREEN STATE FAIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SERVICES
The Monroe Police Department is working in partnership with Snohomish County to incorporate additional traffic control services throughout the duration of the Evergreen State Fair, which will take place from Thursday, Aug. 22 through Monday, Sept. 2 at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds.
Locations for the additional traffic control measures will be: U.S. Highway 2 and Cascade View Drive; U.S. 2 and 179th, the Southeast intersection; U.S. 2 and the Southwest entrance to the West parking lot at the fairgrounds; U.S. 2 and the Southwest exit of the West parking lot at the fairgrounds.
The police department will ensure that officers are in place at these locations directing traffic.-á Traffic control devices such as barricades and traffic cones may also be utilized.
The hours of enforcement coincide closely with the fair's scheduled hours of public operation, and will include daily safety meetings.
PARKS AND RECREATION UPDATE
If you've seen construction work recently at Rotary Field in the Sky River Park, it is due to the long-awaited permanent restrooms that are now being installed. The two pre-fabricated restroom sections were lifted into place by crane, and carefully placed together.
"It was really something to see,GÇ¥ said Monroe Parks & Recreation Director Mike Farrell.-á "Now contractors are busy, doing all that final site-work.GÇ¥
Parks thanked the members of the Monroe Rotary Club, who were responsible for fundraising over $50,000 to be used towards the project.
The new restroom facilities, which are fully wheelchair accessible, will be completed and ready for use before the end of August. Parks is working with Rotary to schedule a "grand flushingGÇ¥ ceremony which is targeted for mid-September.
Rotary Field is home to Monroe's Miracle League, which is a youth baseball league specifically developed for children who have special needs. The field is also utilized by many other community youth sports leagues and tournaments. (See story page?)
MUSICFEST
Parks will host an outdoor music festival.-á The event, called Monroe MusicFest, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. at Lake Tye Park.
The concert will feature Monroe resident, music producer and guitarist Keith Brock with his band the L.A. Allstars, and special guest John Popper of Blues Traveler.-á Opening acts include the Seattle blues group The Randy Oxford Band and $5 Fine.
There will be a beer, wine and food garden.-á Tickets are $20, children under 12 are free.

MONROE POLICE DEPARTMENT
Four candidates for the Monroe Police Department are currently in training.
"We now have four potential officers in the academy and we're looking forward to graduation ceremonies in September, October and December,GÇ¥ said Police Chief Tim Quenzer.
After the academy, the new officers will receive field training for approximately six months, prior to being released for independent duty.
