City honoring former Monroe mayor with building name

Monroe Mayor Geoffrey Thomas announced the city will honor former Mayor Donnetta Walser this week by dedicating Monroe's Parks and Public Works Building in her honor. The building will henceforth be named the Donnetta Walser Building.-á

The ceremony takes place 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 769 Village Way. Walser served the city of Monroe for more than 30 years, as a city councilmember, civil service commissioner and a two-term mayor. Walser served as the mayor from 2002 through December 2009, when she was unseated by former mayor Robert Zimmerman.

A longtime educator, Walser taught for the Monroe School District for 27 years.

She has served on the U.S. 2 Safety Coalition, for which her husband Fred is the chairman, and is a member of the League of Women Voters.-á

All are welcome to attend the dedication ceremony.
