Council honors Sultan Community Task Force for volunteer work

The city of Sultan honored members of the Sultan Community Task Force during the city council meeting on Thursday, July 23, as the Volunteer Spotlight for the month of July. Every month, the Volunteer Spotlight program recognizes individuals, groups, organizations and committees for above-and-beyond community outreach.
Volunteer Spotlight recipients are honored before the council and given a certificate of appreciation signed by Sultan Mayor Carolyn Eslick. There to accept the honor were task force facilitator Calei Vaughn, with task force members Shaun Carr, Rob Prosch and Tiffany Kerr.
The Sultan Community Task Force was founded last July by Mayor Eslick, in response to public outcry over drug activity, the number of homeless individuals illegally camping and leaving trash in the city parks, petty crimes, car prowls and loitering. Once the group became established, Eslick appointed Vaughn as its leader.
Currently, the task force has three primary areas of focus, including working to keep Sultan's parks and public areas clean and free from trash, providing services to those who are interested in receiving help and mentoring at-risk youth in the community.
"Looking into the future, the task force is focusing on programs that will provide credible and effective mentorship programs for youth, continue with Main Street efforts to bring the community back together, and keeping the parks and public spaces clean and available for everyone to feel safe and enjoy,GÇ¥ said Sultan Volunteer Coordinator Donna Murphy.
The Sultan Community Task Force estimates that over 150 tons of garbage has been removed from Sultan's community parks and public spaces since they started their cleanup efforts a year ago.
The task force meets every Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Sultan City Hall (319 Main St.).
