Sky Valley residents are all too familiar with the risks associated with living near the Skykomish River, including flooding, property damage and impassable roadways. There will be two public meetings in Sultan the next week related to flood risks.
FEMA flood maps
Snohomish County is hosting an open house to review preliminary flood maps produced by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The meeting takes place 6-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, in the Sultan High School commons. The draft maps show flood risk areas along portions of the Skykomish, Snoqualmie and Sultan rivers, including property in special flood hazard areas, which is one of the factors used to determine flood insurance rates.
Attendees are encouraged to review the draft maps prior to the meeting and come with questions. The preliminary Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps can be reviewed here.
Sultan High School is located at 13715 310th Ave. S.E. in Sultan.
Mann and Ben Howard roads
This meeting has been cancelled due to a severe storm warning.
Snohomish County Public Works is hosting a meeting to present the findings of a feasibility study to examine flood risks on Mann and Ben Howard roads. The meeting takes place 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at Mountainview Christian Fellowship in Sultan.
The study was conducted in an effort to understand how and where Mann and Ben Howard roads flood and how the levels of the Skykomish River correlate to the flooding.
