Dancing is good exercise for body and mind

By Polly Keary, Editor
Exercise doesn't have to be work. Some of the best forms of exercise aren't actually exercises, but instead are fun activities.
And one of the most fun ways to get fit is by dancing.
At Turtletraxx Entertainment's studio at Wellbeing Center for Health in Monroe, people can learn swing dance, salsa and other popular dances, all while getting in some healthy activity, and have a lot of fun doing it.
The newest of the offerings at Turtletraxx, run by Stephen Buckley and Darlene O'Grady, is a five-week East Coast swing class.
"It's a beginners' swing class," said Buckley. "The swing that we teach is faster-paced, and done to a faster-paced music."
Dancing has kept Buckley and O'Grady in great shape, and it can burn around 315 calories per hour.
And it's something people enjoy at any age.
"We get people from 20-something on up to 75-plus," said Buckley. "We even had an 85-year-old person in one case. It's really all ages."
And after five weeks, you've got a new skill.
"After five weeks you can go out dancing and do the basic moves and turns," said Buckley.
The classes are affordable, at $50 for the whole five-week session.
And you can take them back-to-back to improve your skills, too, said Buckley.
Dancing is good exercise for more than just the body.
Studies have shown that regular dancing helps people maintain their mental acuity, too.
"It keeps your mind as well as your body fit," said Buckley.
