District testing air quality at Sky Valley Education Center

When concerns were raised about one wing of the Sky Valley Education Center, the Monroe School District conducted professional testing to determine if there were any contaminants.

"We did find that the HVAC was misadjusted, and so we adjusted some adjustments there and then had no further complaints heard,GÇ¥ said Rosemary O'Neil, director of communications for the school district.

That was until a month ago, when concerns were raised again in other areas within the same wing of the school as before, and the district is also responding as it did last year, O'Neil said.

As a precaution, carpeting was removed from several classrooms and the concrete under it was sealed over the winter break.

"That was their preference, actually,GÇ¥ O'Neil said. "It was an opportune time to be in there and making a mess and being a little disruptive.GÇ¥

Another round of testing for contaminants was also conducted last week by PBS Environmental, the results of which are pending. The company that performed last year's HVAC work was also called in to look at the system, which will be returned to its factory indicated adjustments, O'Neil said.
