Downtown vandalism spree leaves shattered car windows

By Polly Keary, Editor
Early Thursday morning, what at first appeared to be an isolated case of malicious mischief turned out to be a rash of vandalism in which more than a dozen cars had windows shattered by shots from a BB gun.
Officer Joe Spark was cruising the downtown just before 2 a.m. when he noticed a smashed car window.
"I saw the first one on Madison Street and the second one two doors south and that got everyone cruising around," said Spark. "It was one after the other, on Blakeley, Fremont, Lewis and Elizabeth Streets."
In all, 13 windows were shot out with a BB gun.
It is reminiscent of a string of incidents in 2008 and 2009, in which more than 50 car windows were shot out with a BB gun, totaling nearly $18,000 in damage.
There were several arrests and the incidents abated, but appear to be on the rise again.
The day didn't get any better; later that morning it was reported that someone broke into the Burger King.
Police are asking that anyone who sees or hears anything suspicious call 911 and report it.
