Eat Local: Talking Turkey

By Polly Keary and Chris Hendrickson
Leaves are changing color, and that means that pretty soon poultry cases are going to fill with large birds in local grocery

stores.
But there's no need to wait until November to get your turkey on; two Sky Valley restaurants have exceptional turkey sandwiches on the menu to give you a preview of the season.
Steve's American Cafe and Grill has been open in the Red Barn building in Monroe for less than a month, but it's already got return clientele, and one of the reasons is the turkey, cream cheese and cranberry sandwich.
The turkey there has a carved-off-the-bird taste, instead of a deli case flavor, and there's a lot of it on a sandwich. The simple sandwich is completed with a thick layer of cream cheese and the tangy sweetness of whole cranberries, with a helping of green leaf lettuce for crunch.
It comes with a side of your choice. Soups here are a good choice; all are made from scratch, right down to the stock. The chicken noodle is unmistakably homemade, with large pieces of carrot and celery, big chicken chunks and thick egg noodles.
\*Also try: For cold autumn days, Steve's comfort food menu is just the thing, and food doesn't get much more comforting than does chicken and biscuit pie. At Steve's, when ordered to go, it comes in a take-away baking dish, filled with velvety gravy, big veggies and lots of chicken, all topped with two biscuits for a carbohydrate hit that will lift the spirits on the dreariest of days.

Up valley, a turkey sandwich that stands out for sheer size is the turkey and bacon sandwich at the Sultan Bakery.
Sultan Bakery sandwiches are served on the bakery's homemade bread which is crusty, thick, soft and gigantic.-áCreated

with generous proportions of meat complimented with just the right amount of lettuce, tomatoes, onions and cheese, the turkey bacon super-sized sandwich is one that doesn't disappoint. Piled high with home-cooked turkey and thick slices of crispy bacon, the sandwich is enough to feed two, and the Sultan Bakery's signature bread really makes it something special.
\*Also try: Don't go to the Sultan Bakery without taking home a treat from the pie case. Pies and desserts are as generously sized as are the sandwiches, and their popularity means that what's in the case is fresh.
