"The Hollywood Bowl!GÇ¥
"No, that place where they have the Rose Bowl!GÇ¥
"No, it wasn't, it was somewhere north of that, where was it?GÇ¥
My fianc+¬, Tommy, made a face as if, by scowling harder, he could remember where the first Super Bowl was played.
He and I were sitting with a group of friends from Monroe at Bert's Tavern in Bothell, playing trivia.
We were there because next week I'm hosting a trivia night fundraiser, and I wanted to see how, exactly, one goes about it.
There was a little booklet of five stapled pages on the table. We wrote our team name on it (the Amazing Greats; hey, we had about one minute to come up with it) and then, as the host called out trivia questions, we wrote our answers in the spaces provided.
The first round was Super Bowl history. I surprised myself by knowing that the team to lose the most Super Bowls was the Buffalo Bills.
The next round was quotes from movies, then there was a picture round. We had to identify the people pictured on a sheet of paper, then their famous counterparts. Most of them were easy, but Paul Simon had me stumped for a while.
The song clip category was easier. My friend, Joel, knew the classics; I knew the "80s rock, my fianc+¬ knew the current pop.
The last round was general trivia. Did you know the longest river in the U.S. is the Missouri, by about 25 miles? Now you do.
It was a lot of fun, over in about an hour, and we won a $15 gift certificate.
The best part was that the host, who actually has a trivia company that hosts nights like those all over the area, is volunteering to send a host to emcee our trivia night next week.
I'm once again raising funds to buy school supplies for kids in some of Nicaragua's poorest schools, which is something I do every year.
Every year, then, finds me racking my brain, trying to come up with fundraiser ideas. I've done dinners, salsa dance performances, jazz concerts and blues revues.
This year, I just wanted to do something relaxed and fun.
So I thought about what is fun to do with friends on a cold evening.
My friends all seem to like to eat, enjoy a beer and hang out. So I decided to do a trivia night this year.
I asked Adam over at Adams Bistro if we could have it at his place, and he immediately demonstrated why he is one of the town's favorite businessmen. He offered to let us have the place on a Monday, when he's usually not open, and he's making snacks and offering a few prizes.
He was so gracious and enthusiastic about supporting my little third-world project that I'll forever be grateful. What a cool guy.
So here's what I hope I can get you to do. Gather a few friends and come down to Adam's Monday, Feb. 17 at 6:30 p.m. next week. It's only $15 to get in, the bar is going to be open; there's going to be good food, and trivia is fun.
I'll talk about my project in Nicaraguan schools briefly, and if you want to help out with that, great. It's a really great way to help kids who have less than most of us can imagine, for very little money. It costs about $6 to set a kid up with a year's worth of school supplies. We can get enough dental equipment to treat kids at four entire schools, kids who might otherwise not get dental care at all, for about $100. And we can fix broken desks for about $5 each.
But mostly, we're just going to have a good time and maybe you can win a prize or two.
You can learn more about my Nicaragua project by looking up Vecinos (that's the name of my project; it means "neighborsGÇ¥ in Spanish) on Facebook. There are a number of pages by that name; look for the icon with the school kid in a green shirt.
And, in case you were wondering, the first Super Bowl was in Los Angeles, and the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs.
