Evergreen garden favorites, Asian style

By Holly Glen Gearhart
Striking in winter, majestic in spring, summer and fall, what can compare to the constancy of the Asian garden? My favorite element of an Asian garden is the hardy Pacific Northwest Japanese maple, as seen in the accompanying photo. Easily transplanted into your garden, this colorful variety of tree has leaves that dance with a simple breeze and can withstand most of our powerful north winds.
Maples come in many varieties, from three-foot-tall dwarves to roof-towering trees. They provide a display of colors especially in the fall, but can winter over with comparatively little care.
Many gardens in the Pacific Northwest are Asian-inspired and quite showy, requiring a quarter acre or more. The Japanese maple is stunning choice for landscapers seeking to create such an environment.
If you have only an apartment balcony or a small piece of land you might consider the dwarf variety of maple or try your hand at traditional bonsai!
