The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified 30-year-old Sarah A. Zimmerman as the drowning victim found floating in the lower falls at Wallace Falls State Park on Tuesday, April 24.
Park visitors reported seeing the Bothell woman “bobbing in the water” around 4 p.m. April 24, and sheriff’s office search and rescue responders recovered her body.
Zimmerman’s cause of death is drowning and the manner is accidental, according to the examiner’s office. How Zimmerman ended up in the water is unclear.
“We don’t know,” said Shari Ireton with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. “We believe she was hiking alone, so there’s really no way to know what happened.”
Zimmerman is believed to have drowned in the falls the same day as when her body was found.
Ireton said the three falls in Wallace Falls State Park are amazing, but in a canyon that includes a trail along fencing. People often try to get a better view, which has resulted in accidental deaths in the past.
“Even if you go into the second falls, you’re not going to make it,” Ireton said. “We’ve had some people miraculously survive the third falls.”
Eighteen-year-old Haylei Hughes died after falling into Wallace River in July 2017, her body later found at the base of the lower falls.
