This photo looks east on Main Street from near Blakeley Street. It pairs with Monroe Historical Society photo 1520 to give a before-and-after look at a time when SR 522 was temporarily routed through Main Street in early 1962. The reroute lasted until the final segment of SR 522 was built from 164th to U.S. 2 in 1967.
For SR 522 to be routed through town, angle parking had to give way to parallel parking, and the blinking four-way stoplight at Main & Lewis Streets was changed to a regular, timed stoplight. There are good views of the Silver Dollar Tavern, the Monroe Monitor, Ingall's Realty and OK Sundries on the north side. On the south side, there are good views of Byron Hardware and Mrs. Johnson's Monroe Bakery.
Please look for photo 1520 in the November 20 Monroe Monitor for the "afterGÇ¥ photo. If you have a chance to compare the two photos, note that the car in the lower right appears to be identical in both photos, and the coffee shop sign on the left in the Savoy Hotel has changed to Tiff's Cafe.
