Former Seahawk hired as MHS football coach

After hanging up his jersey as a Washington State Cougar and a Seattle Seahawk, Monroe's Michael Bumpus is taking on his new role as the head coach of Monroe High School (MHS) football team. The Monroe Bearcats have a growing program that has seen post-season play the past four years in a row.
"One-high-school towns are rare,GÇ¥ Bumpus said in a press release. "I knew this was a very special opportunity and I am really grateful to be a Bearcat. I don't plan to change a lot, as Monroe is doing well.GÇ¥
After success at WSU, where he gained accolades as a wide receiver and still holds the school record for career receptions (197), Bumpus, 29, joined the Seahawks for two years before moving to the B.C. Lions in the Canadian Football League.
Since then, he has been involved in several football camps and served in assisting roles for the football programs at Redmond and Snohomish high schools.
Bumpus takes over from Brett Jay, who resigned earlier this year after a single season with the Bearcats.
Bumpus lives in Monroe with his wife, a MHS alumni, and their three children. He owns a local personal fitness business.
"I've met many of the students already and will be spending time now building a relationship with the others,GÇ¥ he stated.
Bumpus was selected by a hiring team including students, parents, school staff and community members.
