Snohomish County will offer free waste disposal vouchers for victims of last week's flood.
The solid waste fee waiver program was implemented by County Executive John Lovick and the Snohomish County Council, and starts on Wednesday, Nov. 25. Once a valid voucher has been obtained, all water-damaged household items will be accepted at county solid waste disposal facilities at no cost to the customer. Spoiled food items resulting from extended power outages will also be accepted.
The vouchers must be obtained prior to discarding items, and may not be used to dispose of commercial or business waste. Acceptable items include flood-damaged carpets, spoiled food, mattresses, clothing, furniture, food, appliances and water-soaked plasterboard. Flood-damaged oil-based paint will also be accepted, along with small amounts of household hazardous waste.
The fee waiver program will be in place through Friday, April 1.
"Providing assistance to Snohomish County residents affected by the floods is a responsibility I feel deeply about and take seriously,GÇ¥ Lovick said. "People dealing with fallout from the floods shouldn't have to worry about the additional costs of disposing of flood-damaged items and food. This fee waiver should help alleviate some concerns about their safety and health as they work to get back on their feet as soon as possible.GÇ¥
There is a 5-cubic-yard limit per load. Residents with large amounts of flood-damaged property may request more than one voucher. According to Snohomish County, "a standard size pick-up truck loaded level to the side rails holds about two cubic yards.GÇ¥
