Fryelands Elementary School was put on lockdown this morning following concerns about possible gunmen in Lake Tye Park.
According to school district spokesperson Rosemary O'Neil, a woman was walking through the school parking lot on her way into the school to volunteer at 10 a.m., when she became aware of a car coming through the parking lot at high speed.
The woman turned, and as she did, the occupant of a blue four-door car that may have been a hatchback yelled at her to call the police.
"The person said, "Tell them to call the police right away, there are two men with guns in the park,'GÇ¥ said O'Neil.
So the woman went straight to the office and reported the incident, and the school called 911.
School officials put the school on perimeter lockdown immediately as police arrived to search the area.
Police searched the park and the surrounding neighborhood, but no sign was found of armed people. Nor could police locate the car from which the report came.
The school was kept on lockdown through the first recess, with children staying in the classrooms as they do on rainy days, and once police said they believed the neighborhood was safe, the loackdown was lifted, right about lunchtime.
"The good news is that no one was found,GÇ¥ said O'Neil. "The school reacted promptly and appropriately, and the police do a fantastic job keeping us safe and informed.GÇ¥
