Students at Fryelands Elementary welcomed new families to their community after a school-wide drive to purchase toys and games for the children's room at Housing Hope's Woods Creek Village.
"I wanted to make kids happier with toys,GÇ¥ said Emily Sandoval, 4th-grader and Fryelands Student Council President. The effort was sponsored by the student council, and all classes at the school participated.
Housing Hope is a program that provides affordable housing and supportive services to homeless and low-income families in Snohomish County. Woods Creek Village, located in Monroe, began with the rehabilitation of two existing four-plex buildings in 2008. Recently six brand new units have been added to the site, along with a community room, childcare room, and an office for the case manager.
"This is in our town,GÇ¥ said Traci Adams, Fryelands 2nd-grade teacher and student council advisor. "It hits close to home. The students were motivated to do things to help others their own age.GÇ¥
"I like helping children who don't have as many things as we do,GÇ¥ said Jenna Monson, student council secretary and 4th-grader. "I like helping get them some toys for them to play with.GÇ¥
Housing Hope provided posters to advertise the drive that spurred the collection of more than $100. "They had pictures of kids on them and a map to show where the houses are,GÇ¥ said Skyler Witham, student council treasurer and 4th-grader. "We hung them up by the bathrooms and in the hallways.GÇ¥
"We were so delighted to receive the funds from the schoolchildren of Fryelands,GÇ¥ said Loria Preston, Volunteer Outreach Coordinator of Housing Hope. "Not only will these resources help provide items for Woods Creek, but they're a wonderful expression of generosity and compassion on the part of the students.GÇ¥
Student council members are already making plans to continue to support the Woods Creek Village next year.
