Garcia-Pacheco sentenced to 22 years for wife's murder

Oscar Garcia-Pacheco, the man who brazenly stabbed his wife in Monroe last summer near the corner of West Main and North Lewis Streets, faced sentencing last week.
Garcia-Pacheco was sentenced in Snohomish County Superior Court on Monday, Sept. 15, to 22 years in prison. He was convicted in July after pleading guilty to a charge of first degree domestic violence murder with a deadly weapon.
Garcia-Pacheco's wife, Jacoba Ramirez-Rodriguez, had alleged brutal abuse at the hand of her husband since 2000. She finally got the courage to leave him, and in April of 2013, the couple began the process of separating.
On May 22, 2013, Ramirez-Rodriguez, after providing extensive detail about what she'd gone through, was granted a temporary order of protection from Evergreen District Court Judge Steven Clough. Two days later, her husband arrived at their jointly-owned business on North Lewis Street and the two began to have an argument. Ramirez-Rodriguez attempted to serve her husband with the protection order, but when she went to retrieve the paperwork from her vehicle, he followed her, pulled out a knife, and stabbed her 19 times.
Several witnesses saw the incident and responded by calling 911. A nurse and several other individuals attempted to render aid to Ramirez-Rodriguez while waiting for the medics to arrive. Garcia-Pacheco fled into an alley, and once police arrived, threatened to kill himself with the knife he had used to injure his wife. Non-lethal force was then used to subdue him.
Ramirez-Rodriguez was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
As a result of her extensive injuries, Ramirez-Rodriguez suffered a massive stroke on May 26, 2013 which left her brain-dead. Her family then made the decision to take her off life support, and Ramirez-Rodriguez passed away on June 2, 2013.
Garcia-Pacheco was also taken to Harborview after the incident, where he eventually contacted authorities and confessed to planning the attack. Court documents state that he revealed to law enforcement that his intention had been to kill Ramirez-Rodriguez and then kill himself.
Surveillance cameras at the Monroe Fred Meyer store showed Garcia-Pacheco in the store just an hour before the incident purchasing a four-pack of standard kitchen knives.
At the time bail was set, Garcia-Pacheco had an immigration and customs enforcement hold, indicating that he may not have legal residency status in the United States. If so, Garcia-Pacheco could be deported upon his release from prison.
