Get an early start on the race season with the Jayme Biendl Memorial 5k Sunday

Five K races are a staple of summer outdoor fun for many fitness enthusiasts and casual exercisers. But this weekend, runners and walkers can get an early start on the racing season by running the second annual Jayme Biendl Memorial Run Sunday, Jan. 27.
The five kilometer run/walk will benefit the Behind the Badge Foundation, which supports the law enforcement agencies, families and communities after an officer has been seriously injured or killed in the line of duty.
The run was started last year to commemorate correctional officer Jayme Biendl, who was killed by an inmate while on duty at the prison in Monroe in January of 2011.
The race begins at 10 a.m. at Sky River Park and proceeds along West Main Street, up a short but challenging hill to the front entrance to the prison grounds. It then doubles back and returns to the park. Participants may run, jog or just walk the course.
Last year almost 400 people turned out for the run, and this year attendance could be even stronger.
A registration deadline guaranteeing a race T-shirt has already passed, but it's not too late to sign up for the race. Registration is $30.
To register for the run, contact Cindy Chessie at (360) 863-4582, by fax at (360) 794-3129 or via email at cchessie@ci.monroe.wa.us. Register online at www.regonline.com/jaymebiendlmemorial5kfunrun.
