A girl struck by a car on Old Owen Road June 20 is expected to pull a full recovery, said her father TJ Councill, but it's going to take some time.
The details of the crash still aren't fully understood, pending the outcome of a police investigations into the incident.
But police reported that at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 20, a car struck Kyleigh Councill, 13, on the 21000 block of Old Owen Road.
According to Kyleigh's father, no one saw what happened. Kyleigh's mother lives on Old Owen, and relatives live in nearby homes. Kyleigh had left her Mom's house to walk to the graduation party of a cousin when she was hit.
The family heard the sound of brakes and tires and ran outside to find Kyleigh on the ground. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene to cooperate with authorities.
Emergency responders discovered Kyleigh to have multiple skull fractures, a broken leg and other injuries. Kyleigh was taken to Providence in Everett and from there to Harborview Medical Center's ICU.
Councill said that Kyleigh will likely spend another week at Harborview before heading to Children's Hospital for what is likely to be extensive therapy.
At first Kyleigh's dad, a union commercial construction worker, was confident that insurance was going to cover all the expenses. But now he's not so sure.
"I was informed today that my insurance isn't going to be able to cover all of it,GÇ¥ he said last week.
He's waiting to learn what, if any, of the driver's insurance will apply; if the driver is not at fault, the insurance company might contribute nothing.
So when Councill learned that friends of the family had decided to set up a benevolent account for the family, he was surprised.
"They took it on themselves, which is awesome,GÇ¥ he said.
For now, he is spending as much time as he can at the hospital, he said. And he is confidant that Kyleigh will not miss out on her education because of the accident.
Already she is able to walk with a walker, and is having conversations.
"She should be okay to go to school in the fall,GÇ¥ he said. "It wrecked her summer, but she won't miss school.GÇ¥
