Give your home an autumn decor makeover

By Polly Keary, Editor
Fall is on the way, and with it, a huge array of holiday decor.

At Real Deals on Home Decor in Monroe, owner Kayla Luke has filled the showroom with the warm hues of autumn. Among those colors are the vivid oranges and blacks of Halloween, and a huge display of spooky sights greets visitors at the entrance of the Tye Street store.
Within the display are many outdoor decorations sure to draw trick-or-treaters to your door.
There are yard signs that can be driven into the ground of into a bucket of sand by the door, ornamental modernist metal pumpkins, letter blocks that spell "Boo" or "Eek" and many webs and witches for indoor or outdoor scenes.
In the back, Luke has begun unwrapping Thanksgiving decor as well, including pilgrims, turkeys, platters and more.
But for those who want to warm up their homes without decorating for a holiday, there are lots of accents and items to bring the rich reds and oranges of autumn indoors.
Fall foliage abounds, and inexpensive sprigs of red leaves in a rustic jar can brighten a corner or entryway.
Harmonious with the autumn palette are antiques and distressed wood items, and throughout the store are small cabinets, vintage-looking crockery items and even large glassed-in lanterns, perfect for filling with holiday objects.
"You can put lots of things in lanterns," said Luke, displaying a lantern filled with small decorative squashes. "You can run them right into Christmas and fill them with ornaments."

A few fun stuffed animals like the fuzzy felt owls on a shelf add a touch of whimsy, and big sunflowers add a burst of color.
The fashionable color of the season, however, isn't red or orange. It's a sort of a slate blue, noted Luke.
Dishes or small pieces of accent furniture in that shade set off the warm colors of autumn, and paired with the texture and hominess of this season's burlap, it's possible to get a look that is fashion-forward and old-fashioned all at once.
And don't forget the easiest and least expensive seasonal accent that not only adds color and beauty but light and scent to any room.
"Candles warm up everything," said Luke.
