While it definitely had its share of glitz and glam, the Gold Dust Royalty Pageant was about a lot more than just appearances.
Held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, at Gold Bar Elementary School (419 Lewis St.), new royalty was crowned in eight different age divisions. Meant to promote community advocacy and volunteerism, pageant contestants also participated in a food drive, collecting a total of 2,149 food items and $260 in cash. All proceeds from the food drive will benefit the Volunteers of America Western Washington Food Bank located in Sultan.
Several new crowns were added to the Gold Dust Pageant program this year, including two Lifetime Queen titles and an Alumni Queen title. The Lifetime Queen titles were granted to 2014 Gold Dust Ambassador Liberty Roeder and 2014 Baby Miss Briella Caniparoli, who will remain a part of the pageant during upcoming years.
The 2015 Alumni Queen title went to Shiloh Bassetti, 6, who also took the crown in the Little Miss division (5 GÇô 7). Bassetti achieved the highest score of the night, winning for best smile, cover model, most poise and best patriotic wear.
In addition to the Lifetime Queen and Alumni titles, pageant directors Patty and Katelyn Baller added a brand new Prince division, which enabled one Monroe family to win a hat-trick. Nine-year-old Brooklyn Perdomo took the crown in the Junior Miss division (8 GÇô 10), her older sister Alexis, 12, won the crown in the Pre-Teen division (11 GÇô 12), and their younger brother Ryder, 4, took the crown in the Prince division (2 GÇô 8).
The articulate set of siblings took numerous other titles as well, including best interview.
The prestigious Queen of Queens title was awarded to 2014 Pre-Teen Queen Kiana Kendall, who performed the National Anthem during the opening ceremonies. The Queen of Queens recipient is selected by pageant directors based on community and pageant engagement throughout the year.
