The Sultan Education Foundation's annual golf tournament offers the perfect opportunity to play golf for a great cause.
The tournament, which serves as the foundation's primary fundraiser for the year, will take place on Saturday, August 16, at the Blue Boy West Golf Course in Monroe. The tournament will be played in a four-person scramble format, and participants can choose between either an 8 a.m. or a 1 p.m. tee time. Entry fees are $60 per individual or $240 for a team of four.
Entry fees include dinner, 18-holes of golf and the opportunity to win prizes. There will be a $10,000 hole-in-one opportunity, as well as prizes for men's and women's longest drive and closest to the pin.
Dinner will take place at 5 p.m. along with the awards ceremony.
All proceeds generated from the tournament will be used to fund scholarships and classroom grants for the Sultan School District.
Celebrating its 21st anniversary, the Sultan Education Foundation was founded in 1993 by Brian and Debbie Copple and Laura Koenig, who still serve as foundation board members. Currently, Ole Carlson, Chuck Donaldson, June Farwell and John Seehuus also serve on the board of directors. Rather than accepting compensation for their roles, SEF board members often make contributions to the foundation throughout the year.
Debbie Copple shared that Brian will sometimes donate to the foundation in her name at Christmas or other typical gift-giving occasions.
"There comes a time in your life where you just don't need any more stuff,GÇ¥ said Debbie. "He knows that the foundation is really important to me.GÇ¥
The mission of the Sultan Education Foundation is to "enhance academic and cultural opportunities for students in the Sultan School District in order to encourage their personal development, scholastic excellence, and life skills.GÇ¥
The foundation supports the school district in two primary ways; through classroom grants and individual scholarships. The classroom grants are used to provide updated technology and other enhancements.
Since the foundation's inception in 1993, they have awarded $85,000 in classroom grants and over $320,000 in scholarships to students of the Sultan School District. In 2014 alone, the SEF awarded $23,600 in scholarships.
The funds are raised via an occasional fundraising breakfast, the annual golf tournament and through private donations.
"The golf tournament is our main fundraiser,GÇ¥ said Koenig.
The Blue Boy West Golf Course is located at 27927 Florence Acres Rd. in Monroe. Golf carts are available, for an additional fee, on a first come first serve basis. Additional seats can be purchased for non-golfers to have dinner with their participating family members at the tournament for $15 per person. Beverages and snacks are available for purchase at the golf course throughout the day.
