The Great Northern & Cascade Railway, in the town of Skykomish, will hold its official season opening celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3.
Located in the Skykomish Town Center, the miniature live-steam locomotive is rideable and meant to serve as both a tourist attraction and an opportunity to experience the town's railroad history. Built by volunteers and sustained by donations, the 7-1/2-gauge railroad is entering into its third year of operation.
Since opening the railway in 2013, Project Manager Kevin Weiderstrom has been working to enhance the experience. New features this year include a new passenger shed and crossover track, along with a replica of the Cascade Tunnel.
"This is a great feature [that] shows the old tunnel and the new tunnel,GÇ¥ Weiderstrom said.
