A strike that could affect workers at Monroe's three largest grocery stores might not happen after union leaders and company negotiators reached a tentative accord last week.
The accord came within hours of a strike that has been looming for months.
The grocery workers' unions have been negotiating since March, and recently voted to strike if a deal wasn't reached soon.
Among the issues upon which the disagreements centered were proposals to cut some benefits for part-time workers and to deeply cut holiday pay.
Oct. 19, the unions announced that, if an accord wasn't reached within 72 hours, a strike at area Fred Meyer, QFC, Safeway and Albertson's stores would commence.
The countdown dipped below 30 hours before negotiators struck a tentative bargain.
Wednesday, Teamsters spokesperson Tom Geiger confirmed that the strike had been adverted, at least for now.
"We were able to reach a tentative agreement that is unanimously recommended by the union member bargaining team,GÇ¥ he said.
The unions will vote on the proposals in the coming days.
