Hams go "radio-activeGÇ¥ June 28

The Sky Valley Amateur Radio Club will join thousands of other amateur radio operators, aka "hams,GÇ¥ who will be demonstrating their emergency communications training and capabilities from 9 a.m. Saturday, June 28 until 11 a.m. Sunday, June 29. The public demonstration is at Sky River Park, off Village Way in Monroe, during park hours only.
During fires, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, landslides and other crises, hams are often the only means of communication. They are typically the first to provide early observations and information to responders in emergency situations. FEMA, the Dept. of Homeland Security, the National Weather Service and local governments such as the Monroe Emergency Management Office have amateur radio operators in their communications plans.
The demonstration will offer the public a chance to meet and talk with hams who will be operating their radio technology in a deployed emergency field setting.
The Sky Valley Amateur Radio Club meets at Trax Edge Caf+¬ at Valley General Hospital on the third Saturday of each month at 8:30 a.m. For more information on the club, go to www.w7sky.org.
