Hand-held flags to help pedestrians use downtown crosswalks safely

In order to improve Monroe's downtown walkability and enhance pedestrian safety, bright orange hand-held pedestrian safety flags were recently installed at several points along Main Street.
Mary Peterson-Clark, who has been actively advocating for the flags since last December, was very happy to see her idea finally come to fruition. A Monroe resident since 1980, Peterson-Clark has had several near misses in downtown-area crosswalks and has long hoped for a way to make the downtown area safer.
"This is so wonderful,GÇ¥ Peterson-Clark said. "I am so excited!GÇ¥
She hopes that people will use them, and that the flags will stay where they belong.
Additional flags will be installed when the West Main Street construction from Lewis to Blakeley Street is completed in mid to late August. Monroe Mayor Geoffrey Thomas received more than one request for pedestrian safety flags in the last six months, and recently directed city staff to order the low-cost flags. He hopes that the flags, along with the new pedestrian bulb-outs, will serve to improve pedestrian safety in the downtown area.
The flags were installed on Wednesday, July 1. Thomas hopes to add a few more locations in the immediate downtown Monroe core.
