The Snohomish County Health District reports the Monroe Montessori School has been temporarily closed after two children were hospitalized for complications from a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infection.
STEC infection symptoms often involve severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting, though most people get better within about seven days, according to SCHD.
"The exact source of contamination in E. coli can be very difficult to identify, but at this point we believe the children were likely exposed to livestock near their home,GÇ¥ said Dr. Gary Goldbaum, SCHD health officer and director, in a news release. "The school has been cooperating fully as we work with the families and improve existing policies and procedures to prevent these incidents from happening in the future.GÇ¥
The health district is working with Montessori and the Department of Early Learning to test the 60 potentially exposed children and staff.
