Information night set for families of next year's kindergarteners

The first day of a child's academic career can be a lot easier if both child and family know what to expect.
So March 5, families of children who will enter kindergarten in the Monroe School District next fall are invited to an information night at the schools they will attend.
The principal of each school will host an informational meeting at the school, including information on the registration process. Registrations will be accepted at that event, and then every school day after that from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.
Parents who don't know where their child's school is or which school they are to attend can find a map of the different school areas at www.monroe.wednet.edu.
There are several options for kindergarten.
The standard kindergarten is half-time, with children either attending full days Tuesdays and Thursdays or Mondays and Wednesdays, both with some Fridays.
There is an every day, half-day option, as well, either mornings or evenings, but parents will need to provide transportation.
And there is an all-day, every day program, for which families pay tuition. Families who qualify for free or reduced price lunch can get a discount on that tuition.
Frank Wagner Elementary, because of federal funding, offers an all-day program for all kindergarten students, as well as a dual-language kindergarten in which children are instructed in both English and Spanish. That program is limited to 25 English speakers and 25 Spanish speakers (see story, front page). There will be an additional information night about the dual-language program on Feb. 21.
Transportation to the Frank Wagner kindergarten options is only provided to those children who live in the Frank Wagner area. Other families will have to provide transportation. Access to both programs is first-come, first served.
Another kindergarten option available at Maltby Elementary is Montessori. There will be an information session about that program on Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
The information meetings are for adults only. There will be another time scheduled for children to visit their new schools.
Early registration is highly recommended for the optional programs.
In order to enroll, children must have current immunizations and must be 5 by Aug. 31.
