One inmate was taken to Valley General Hospital shortly after noon today after a knife attack in a stairwell left him with multiple stab wounds.
The man, 33, was attacked with a homemade weapon. The suspect, Brian Rivas, 21,-ácurrently serving a 17-year sentence for first degree assault with a deadly weapon in Pierce County, could face new assault charges.
The attack happened in the stairwell of one of the living units at WSR, the oldest of Monroe Correctional Complex's living units. When prison staff separated the two fighting men, they discovered that the older one had several stab wounds. The Monroe Police Department was called to respond at 12:23 p.m.
The man was transported to Valley General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Monroe Police Department, which handles criminal activity at the prison just as they do the rest of the town, is conducting an investigation, and inmates are on limited movement for the time being.
It is thought the incident might be related to gang activity, as the suspect is believed to be gang-involved.
