The two occupants of a Cessna 172 airplane escaped serious injury Friday when their aircraft flipped and landed upside-down at Firstair Field, Monroe's small airport adjacent to the fairgrounds.
The plane left Paine Field in Everett at 3 p.m. and had been in the air two hours when the incident occurred. The pilot, 69, of Seattle, was a flight student of Northway Aviation, an Everett flight school, and was on a training flight with his instructor, 82, of Mountlake Terrace.
The accident occurred as the plane was attempting a landing at Monroe's airport.
The pilot was taken in a private vehicle to Valley General Hospital and treated for minor cuts and abrasions. The pilot was treated at the scene.
The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a very popular four-seat, single engine plane, the most successful small plane ever made, and it is used by the U.S. Border Patrol for border surveillance flights.
