Jury finds former Monroe officer guilty in child sex case

After nearly three and a half days in deliberation, a Snohomish County Superior Court jury has found former Monroe Police officer Carlos Martinez guilty of sex crimes.
The prosecutor spent nearly two weeks providing evidence to prove that Martinez, 61, used his position as a police officer to cultivate a sexual relationship with a young female student, secretly videotaping the girl in various stages of undress for the purposes of sexual gratification. The girl was 15 years old when the videotaping occurred.

The two eventually engaged in a consensual sexual relationship, until Nov. 18, 2011, when the young woman went to the authorities with the videotapes.
The jury announced the verdict shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10. They found Martinez guilty of one count of voyeurism and one count of possession of depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit activity. Due to the statute of limitations, Martinez will only be sentenced on the depictions charge, and will not face sentencing on the voyeurism charge.
Opening arguments were heard on Thursday, Oct. 22, with testimony lasting nearly two weeks. Closing arguments took place on Wednesday, Nov. 4, and the jury began deliberations the next day.
Sentencing will take place at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 21.
