Letter | Emerald City Athletic Club makes donation

John Canada, owner and manager of Emerald City Athletic Club [14925 Chain Lake Road], may be new to our Monroe community, but he is leading the charge against hunger in a big way.
After being made aware of the tremendous need in Monroe last year, [Canada] organized a holiday food drive at the club to support the efforts of the Sky Valley Food Bank. He began by reaching out to other businesses in the community and soliciting donations for an auction to be held at the club. He also purchased electronics, iPads and other popular items. Everything went on display in the club's lobby. [Canada] then offered Emerald City Athletic Club members "fitness dollarsGÇ¥ for each item of food they donated.-á Members were also given "dollarsGÇ¥ for bringing in guests and more "dollarsGÇ¥ if the guests joined the club. For over a month, members collected "dollarsGÇ¥ to bid on the auction items.-á The auction was held during a catered holiday party and was a rousing success.
That first-time effort by Emerald City in 2013 resulted in an amazing donation.-á This year's 2014 drive netted a whopping 8,820 pounds of food. The Sky Valley Food Bank is very grateful for the ongoing contributions [Canada] and the Emerald City Athletic Club are making to feed the needy in our neighborhood.
