I am writing in regard to your December 25, 2012 article written by Polly Keary. I was excited to see that finally someone realized Evergreen Speedway was really on the map.
After reading the article, I was disappointed that nothing was mentioned about the local racers who support Evergreen and make this their home track. After all, wasn't this "One of the top 10 home tracks in the nation,GÇ¥ or so the article said.
Yes, Pro West and Drift do bring a lot of people into our area, but it is the little guy who brought this award to our area. We are the ones who are there every Saturday night from April through September. We race in snow, rain and summer heat. A few of us have big money sponsors, but the majority do not. Why do we race and who are we? We are your neighbors and friends. The guys and gals who love the thrill of speed.
A rundown of our week is as follows: Monday to Friday, work on car, Saturday morning load up and head to the track. Since we are a Nascar track, we have all joined Nascar, at least $95.00 per member. At the track we buy pit passes at $30.00 per person, find a place to park, buy a tire, around $125.00, and fuel, $100.00. Our team is looking at around $400.00, before we unload the car. After tech, we race a heat and main event. If we are lucky we may win a little money, if we are out of the money, our driver will receive a pit pass for next week. Sunday it's unload; hopefully we didn't break anything major and our week starts all over again.
