Loots leaves planning commission

By Sally Gillie, Monitor
Monroe Planning Commission Chair Paul Loots resigned his post earlier this month due to personal reasons. Loots has served as chair for the past two years.
Fellow commissioner Dave Demarest said Loots will be greatly missed.
"I'm sad to see him leave; he has served the city well and brought a balanced approach to his role as planning commissioner,GÇ¥ he said.
Loots led the commission through some challenging decisions, including the controversial East Monroe re-rezone and subsequent citizen appeal. Loots' resignation leaves the planning commission with six members, and the city will be accepting applications to replace him from interested persons.
The role of the planning commission is to review and make recommendation to the city council concerning land use issues, including zoning, code changes and revisions to the city's comprehensive plan.
Applicants must live within the city limits. Those with a variety of skills, interests and experiences are encouraged to apply.
The commission meets monthly on the second and fourth Mondays, 7 p.m., at Monroe City Hall.
Letters of interest should be submitted to Mayor Robert Zimmerman, attention Eadye Martinson. Persons will be notified if they are chosen for an interview.
Any questions can be directed to Kim Shaw, permit supervisor, 360-863-4532.
