About a dozen calls came into the Sultan Fire Department Wednesday night to report a large blaze somewhere in the hills above Mann Road.
The fire department had been warned to expect those calls.
"It's a burn pile of branches from logging up there," said Merlin Halverson, chief of the Sultan Fire Department, who said the fires were in the Haystack Mountain area. "We got calls from the burn managers, telling us we were going to get calls."
Logging companies can get permits to burn detritus from timber cutting. The blaze is large enough to be seen from many points in the valley at night.
Halverson said he thinks the burns might continue periodically until snowfall prevents it.
