MHS Alumnus Samantha Sanders a Fulbright Scholar

Samantha Sanders, a 2007 graduate of Monroe High School, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant to study Engineering in France.
The Fulbright Program is an international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. The program operates in more than 155 countries worldwide.
Sanders graduated from Washington State University in 2011 with a degree in mechanical engineering with an emphasis in materials science engineering, and then went to work for the U.S. Department of Defense as a civilian for the Navy.
"Most of the other people I had heard of getting this scholarship received it while still in school,GÇ¥ said Sanders. "It was all rather serendipitous; an unexpected but welcome surprise.GÇ¥
After spending eight weeks during the summer in an intensive French language course, Sanders is attending Ecole Normale Sup+¬rieure (ENS) Cachan in pursuit of her Master's Degree in Materials Science Engineering.
Sanders is one of only 1,800 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2014-2015 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.
Allan Shell, calculus teacher at MHS, remembered Sanders well. "I can easily see that the discipline, persistence, and willingness to go the extra mile, that she demonstrated in high school, would take her far in college and beyond,GÇ¥ said Shell, "so it isn't a surprise to me that she became a Fulbright Scholar.GÇ¥
