Monroe's high school football team has a great future, if the town's 13 and 14-year-olds are any indication.
For the second year in a row, that group of kids has come out on top of the annual NFL-sponsored Boys and Girls Club Super Bowl.
The team, called the Bengals, is one of several age-group teams that take part in the Boys and Girls Club spring flag football league.
"They start practicing in March and then they have eight regular season games, then the playoffs, and the Super Bowl Championship," said Wendy Schulz, whose husband, Scott, coaches the team and whose son, Gunnar, played on the team.
Kids can start playing as young as 5, and there are divisions based on the children's ages.
The teams, each of which taking the name of an NFL team, compete against others in their area.
The Monroe team went undefeated for the season and ended up with a 28-18 victory over the Edmonds team.
"It was very exciting," said Coach Scott Schultz. "We got out to a pretty big lead and then they closed the gap quite a bit. That team was made up of talented football players from Edmonds."
Almost the same group of athletes won the Super Bowl last year as 11 and 12-year-olds, too, said Schultz.
"For the most part, just a really great group of kids," said Scott Schultz. "The coach had nothing to do with it, other than directing traffic. It's good, talented kids and great teamwork."
