With the close of the State Track and Field Championship last week, another year in sports came to an end for Monroe High School. There were some high points to remember, including a volleyball team that went undefeated in the league and a football team that went to State.
Here is a recap of the outcomes of the 2012-2013 year in sports.
Fall
Football
The Bearcat football team got the Monroe athletic year off to a solid start, leading the league with a 4-4 season and going to the District Tournament. In the post-season, Monroe's Bearcat football team finished the District Championships with back-to-back losses to the Mt. Vernon Bulldogs and Jackson High School, then went on to State as the #2 seed, ultimately losing to Rogers Rams.
Boys' Tennis
Monroe's boys' tennis team endured a tough fall season, going winless and finishing last in the league.
Girls' Soccer
Monroe's girls' soccer team had a very good season with a second-best record in the league, winning 7, losing 8 and tying 1, while scoring a total of 21 goals.
Volleyball
The volleyball team had a stellar regular season, going undefeated in the division and 11 and 2 overall. That landed them the division title and a trip to Districts, where they defeated Lynnwood and Kamiak. They then headed to State, where two losses ended their season.
Swimming
In State competition, Monroe swimmer Cathryn Armstrong took 8th place in 100 meter freestyle and Lavinya Yap got 12th place in 100 meter backstroke and 5th in the 200-meter.
Winter
Boys' Basketball

Girls' Basketball
The girls matched the boys in successes last winter in spite of undergoing the fourth coaching change in four years, celebrating a 13-7 winning season with a trip to Districts. The team also led the league in defense, allowing just 35.7 points per game.
Boys' Wrestling
The wrestling team didn't fare as well, winning 2 and losing 6, and trailing the league.
Spring
Baseball
Monroe's Bearcats had an excellent season, winning 13 and losing 9, coming in third in the Wesco North 4A league and earning a trip to the District Tournament, where they concluded the quarter.
Softball
The girls' fast pitch team also had a very respectable season, winding up a 10-10 season in the top four in the league and going to the Districts, but they were unable to win a place in State competition.
Boys' Soccer
The Bearcat team struggled in 2013, finishing last in the league with a record of one win, 12 losses and three tied games, totaling just five goals in the season.
