Monroe High fair, dinner proceeds to benefit Free the Children

The Monroe community is invited to a special event on Wednesday, February 12, to see what kinds of activities local youth are up to during these teen years.
The event, dubbed "We Are One Night,GÇ¥ starts at 5 p.m. with a 20-booth fair. Each booth will feature a Valentine's Day activity geared towards younger kids, as well as information about one of the school's clubs.
A lasagna dinner follows at 6:30 with performances by the jazz choir, drama department, and a speaker from the Free the Children, an international organization working to empower young people to be agents of change at home and around the world.
We Are One Night is only one event at Monroe High in "We Are One Week,GÇ¥ designed to build community and spread awareness on community and global issues. Students will have an opportunity to sign up at school for special community service events.
A highlight of the week will be an assembly featuring motivation speaker Houston Kraft. He grew up in Snohomish and attended Snohomish High School where he was challenged to become a student leader. He now travels to schools across the nation about speaking up in a world of fear and filling it instead with love. Kraft will also give an after-school workshop to the first 60 students who sign up.
"Houston Kraft does a big campaign that talks about serving others, loving others, unification of the school,GÇ¥ says Kimberly Galicia, MHS senior who is leading the committee to set up service projects for the students. "It goes with our theme for the year.GÇ¥
ASB's annual theme, Under One Roof, focuses on changing the culture at Monroe High to be more of a community, a place where there is no bullying. "The idea is that we are all here together, and we have a lot of gifts,GÇ¥ says Jaime Johnson, ASB Advisor. "Even in our differences, we have a lot of similarities.GÇ¥
Along with building community, Under One Roof also focuses on raising awareness about local and global needs as well as the benefits of service. The students have set a big goal: to raise $10,000 to build a school in Africa. They have spearheaded several service projects and worked to raise $4,100 toward their goal.
MHS student leaders Ginny Piluras, 11th grade, and Tellis Aucoin, 12th grade, are in charge of organizing We Are One Night.
Entry cost is $3. The suggested donation for the lasagna dinner is $5.
