Monroe High School finally has the ballfield envisioned when the school opened in 1999, with two more pending construction this spring.
The school district reports competition-level fields couldn't be constructed when MHS was due to a lack of community support. A voter-approved bond opened a soccer/football stadium and a fourth classroom wing in 2005, but there was still not enough funding to complete the ballfields.
After failing to secure funding in 2010, school leaders began focusing just on one ballfield, and were able to acquire grants from the county Tourism Promotion Area Advisory Board and city of Monroe to achieve that, as well as by harvesting timber on district-owned land and adding local school reserve monies.
That ballfield will open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony prior to the Bearcat Fastpitch softball team's home opener against Seattle Prep on Monday, March 14. Festivities begin at 4 p.m. at the field behind Monroe High at 17001 Tester Road.
Voters passed a bond by a super majority of 62.74 percent last April that will be used to construct two more ballfields, as well as other school improvements.
