Monroe High School has been designated a certified testing site for the Microsoft IT Academy program. Through a partnership between Microsoft and the state Career and Technical Education department of the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, all high schools in the state have access to the IT Academy, which was designed by Microsoft for accredited academic institutions worldwide.
Monroe High school offers the program through the business department's Microsoft Applications class. Though the certification testing has only been available since February, 10 students have already earned 14 certifications and are working to complete additional certifications before semester end.
"This is going to help me with getting certain types of jobs that require knowledge of Microsoft programs,GÇ¥ said sophomore Kyle Bailey. "I also wanted to learn PowerPoint to help with presentations.GÇ¥ Bailey is certified in PowerPoint, and is working on Word and Excel certifications.
Senior Ronnie Geddes said his Word certification has already helped him in the classroom. "I've been able to save documents and create macros,GÇ¥ he said. He is working on PowerPoint and Excel, and would like to earn Word Expert.
Alex Nosky, a senior, has always wanted to learn PowerPoint. "I found the animations really cool,GÇ¥ he said.
"Excel has been really useful,GÇ¥ said Senior Sabrina Wiecher. "It's made it easier to make graphs and other data charts I need for chemistry.GÇ¥
Sophomore Kunal Sharma plans to work in an office job that involves computers. "My dad told me I would need to know Office,GÇ¥ he said. "I want to certify in all the programs that will be useful."
According to Alan Ottini, the Microsoft Applications instructor, the curriculum is challenging, and the tests are at industry standards.
"The Microsoft Office Certification is recognized worldwide and will give students a competitive edge in the job market,GÇ¥ he said. "It is an excellent opportunity to prepare for college or a career.GÇ¥
