It's Monroe Police and Fire Appreciation Week, an annual event organized by the Monroe Police and Fire Chaplain Program to honor local first responders.
Monroe Police and Fire Appreciation week gives Monroe residents the opportunity to engage with law enforcement officers and firefighters and thank them for their service. Historically, the week is filled with numerous visits by police officers and firefighters to local schools, where they visit with kids and receive handmade cards. Monroe Mayor Geoffrey Thomas will read the formal Police and Fire Appreciation Week proclamation on Tuesday, Nov. 17, during the Monroe City Council meeting.
Each year, Police and Fire Appreciation Week culminates in an appreciation lunch held at the Monroe Fire Department. Pastor Michael Hanford, one of the event's founders, coordinates the lunch. Sister Barbara Geib of St. Mary of the Valley Catholic Church, who initiated the Monroe Police Chaplain program more than 30 years ago, is also a founder.
Police and Fire Appreciation Week is sponsored by the Monroe School District, the Monroe Rotary Club, the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, the local faith community, the Monroe Police and Fire Chaplain Program, the YMCA and many appreciative Monroe residents.
This will be the 15th annual appreciation week. The event began as Police Appreciation Week, but was later changed to include Monroe's firefighters.-á
