Monroe Police arrest gas station burglary suspect who made off with cigarettes

Police arrested a 54-year-old Monroe man for burglary on Sunday, after he allegedly smashed out a convenience store window and stole cigarettes and cigars from behind the counter.

Monroe officers responded to an alarm at the Shell gas station in the 19300 block of State Route 2 around 1:43 a.m., but did not find the suspect inside.

The suspect was later identified through surveillance footage, which shows a rock coming through the store window around 1:12 a.m., and the man entering about 20 minutes later, according to a police news release.

Officers were reportedly familiar with the suspect from a prior burglary arrest in 2011, and responded to the man's last known address to find him. The man had since moved, but tenants allegedly reported seeing the man yelling on Main Street near the gas station the night before.

Officers arrested the man after spotting him walking on Main Street at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The suspect allegedly told officers he was drunk and wanted cigarettes at the time of the crime, the release states, and told police where to find the stolen merchandise.
