Proposition 1, a tenth-of-a-penny sales tax on goods sold in the city of Monroe, passed Aug. 6 with a resounding 69.12 percent of the vote. Only a simple majority of more than 50 percent was required for passage.
The tax measure is expected to bring between $200,000 and $250,000 to the police department annually, to fund additional officers and bring back the three-beat patrol system that ensured that there was a police presence in three areas of the city at all times. That meant that police could reach emergencies without being delayed by trains or heavy Highway 2 traffic.
The tax will be on all non-grocery taxable goods sold in Monroe, except cars.
In other outcomes, County Councilman Dave Somers, who represents the Sky Valley, got a strong showing in the primary, garnering 62 percent of the vote. His challenger, Republican Chris Vallo, won 43 percent of the vote. Lacking other opponents, the two will proceed to the general election in November.
Up-valley, Fire District 28 handily passed a property tax levy, clearing 76.6 percent of the vote.
