Monroe Public Schools will hold its third annual Food Day 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Fryelands Elementary, showcasing local farmers and introducing the public to staff from district meal provider, Chartwells.
Organic farms Willie Greens, Skipley Farm and Oxbow Farm will on hand to share information and show their produce, and parents and students in attendance will have the opportunity to enjoy healthy snacks. There will be art projects for children and a surprise guest chef will provide demonstration cooking.
Willie Greens is the only local farm used by the school district, but MPS child nutrition director Dana Daniel wants to add more farms, especially for meats and dairy. Sixty percent of the food provided by MPS is locally grown. Farms must obtain Good Agricultural Practices certification to work with public schools.
"We live in an area that's abundant with farms and highly dedicated farmers,GÇ¥ Daniel said in a news release. "I love to see us be able to utilize what is right here in our back yard.GÇ¥
