Monroe residents start receiving wireless water meters next week

Starting the first week in May, Monroe water customers will begin receiving new wireless water meters in accordance with the city's planned installation of its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).
The city has contracted with Ferguson Waterworks to complete the installation of the meters. The replacement process is expected to take approximately 20 minutes from start to finish, and water service will be interrupted during that time. The installation crews will be easily identifiable with ID badges and uniforms that display the Ferguson Waterworks logo. They will travel in marked company vehicles and have completed background checks.
The project will begin during the week of May 2-6, and is expected to be completed in the upcoming weeks.
Residents are being asked to make their meter boxes accessible by removing objects that could hinder replacement efforts. The installation team will attempt contact with homeowners prior to installation by knocking on the door. If no one is home, they will proceed with the installation. They will leave a door tag to notify residents when the work is complete.
The new wireless meters will collect multiple readings per day, and are expected to enhance customer service through better leak detection and higher billing efficiency.
Monroe Finance Director Dianne Nelson gave the Monroe City Council an overview of the process on Tuesday, April 26.
"It has to be done ' we need to upgrade our meters,GÇ¥ Nelson said. "Some of them are way too old and they're not accurate anymore. This is part of the improvement to the infrastructure.GÇ¥
