Monroe School Board Director Jim Scott passes away over the weekend; district responds

By Chris Hendrickson

Monroe School District Superintendent Dr. Fredrika Smith expressed deep sorrow over the unexpected passing of Monroe School Board Director Jim Scott over the weekend.

Scott, a tireless advocate for the Monroe School District, was in his 11th year of service on the Monroe School Board, elected to his third four-year term in 2013. He represented District 4, which covers the Maltby area, including the neighborhoods near Echo Lake, Welch Road and along S.R. 9.

Scott, 67, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 19.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I need to let you know of the passing of our beloved Jim Scott, long time School Board Director of the Monroe School District. There is no way to represent the endless love and dedication that Jim has shared with thousands upon thousands of children,” wrote Smith on social media. “His leadership will be deeply missed. The positive impact of the many thoughtful decisions he has made for our community will be felt for generations to come.”

Community advocate and former Monroe School District employee Bridgette Tuttle expressed dismay at Scott’s passing on social media.

“We never expect that we won’t see someone from our community at the next event or meeting,” wrote Tuttle. “I am thankful for people like Jim who are passionate about what they believe and take time from their own lives to show up for their causes, participate, opine, and engage.”

The Monroe Monitor will be focusing on a tribute to Scott’s service to the Monroe community in upcoming weeks.
